Finally - Good News In and For Patmos!

The news will delight hundreds of Patmian, Greek and foreign citizens who have been concerned regarding recent developments and have been contacting the local authorities, stressing that Patmos “the holy island” is also an exceptional example of the beauty of the landscape of the Aegean islands, which is internationally recognized as worthy of preservation.

1.    Linginou Beach Suspension of excavation and construction work:
ELLINIKI ETAIRIA (Society for the Environment and Cultural Heritage) or “ELLET” has achieved a sixty day suspension of the excavation and construction work that began on Linginou Beach between Christmas and New Year, following persistent representations to the relevant authorities. ELLET’s efforts were based on the current Greek statutory framework regulating building activity outside urban planning zones (in Greek “ektos shediou”).

ELLET has had a long and close connection with the island of Patmos where it has organized activities whose aim has been the preservation of the island’s unique characteristics. Notable among these has been the first implementation on an island of the successful “Greek Paths of Culture” programme, which has since been successfully implemented in many other places.

ELLET has also worked for the statutory protection of the Patmian environment by appealing to the Council of State (in Greek “Symvoulio tis Epikratias”) regarding a building permit higher up on Linginou beach, regarding which the announcement of the Court’s decision is eagerly anticipated.

More recently after a court hearing in the Piraeus Court of Appeal concerning a permit for construction in lower Linginou beach, which took place on 19th December 2017, the contractor began excavation and construction work between Christmas and New Year, without showing the slightest concern for the fact there had not as yet quite naturally, been any court decision. ELLET has taken the necessary steps to obtain a suspension of these works, a suspension which is valid for sixty days from 1st February, and this despite all the difficulties caused by the holiday season, bad weather in the Aegean delaying the delivery of essential documents and even the breakdown of office equipment of some of the relevant authorities!

2.    Livadi tou Geranou Beach - Retraction by the Patmos Town Council of its earlier decision allowing the rental of umbrellas:

Following the initial tied vote on this matter, which had been decided by the casting vote of the Chairman, and the strong and continuous protest of local citizens of Patmos and of Patmians living outside the island, the Town Council has retracted its decision to permit the installation and rental of beach equipment on the beach of Livadi tou Geranou, thus protecting one of the most beautiful landscapes of Patmos, enjoyed equally by Patmians and by visitors. We congratulate the members of the Town Council who voted again the initial decision and in favour of its reversal.

ELLET, together with all those who love Patmos, owe gratitude to those determined and courageous Patmians who were mobilized by these incidents and approached the relevant authorities, as also ELLET. We are also most grateful to people from all over the world who proved their attachment to the beauty of Patmos by taking early and vocal supportive action. This has been of very great assistance.

ELLET, via its “SOS” programme, is trying to respond to hundreds of requests it receives from citizens and local communities from all over the country, in an effort to protect the environment and the cultural heritage of Greece.

Please see below the thank-you letter to ELLINIKI ETAIRIA from the Citizens of Patmos Group.

Dear friends,

It is with joy that we inform you of a first positive development: building works at Ligginou were interrupted following an injunction and court order for a temporary halt to construction for 60 days. The judgement of the court is pending in the case of Elliniki Etaireia's request for an annulment of the building permit--the trial took place on 17 December 2017.

The Citizens of Patmos team wishes to thank Elliniki Etaireia for their coordinated efforts, over the last few years, for the protection of the region of Ligginou in particular, and by extension the greater region of Geranos in Patmos, from illegal actions which have resulted in the alteration of both the natural terrain and the character of the region.

We warmly thank Mr. Costas Carras, who is in charge of the local committees of the Hellenic Society for the Environment and Culture; Mr. Georgios Politis, who is the lawyer of the Hellenic Society for the Environment and Culture, for his efforts; as well as the Patmian lawyer Mr. Theologos Mavroudis for his valuable support in coordinating the team of Citizens of Patmos, as well as for his public statements. We thank all of you, dear friends of Patmos, for your precious help, your letters addressed to various authorities, your public statements, and your kind support for us, the inhabitants of Patmos.

This temporary halt gives us the opportunity to intensify our efforts, to apply greater pressure on state authorities, and to disseminate the message about saving Ligginou and protecting Geranos, and indeed the whole of Patmos. We ask you kindly to keep spreading the word, and to continue expressing your support for conservation as opposed to exploitation.

We sincerely hope that the judgement of the court will annul the building permit so that the construction project will be decisively ended, and that the natural environment of Ligginou will be preserved.

Bear in mind that a success in this court battle will create a legal precedent that could be a shield of protection against future interventions that do not respect the natural environment of Patmos and cause damage to island's precious landscapes. May Ligginou be the boundary at which lawlessness stops, and a living example of protection of the island by its citizens and friends.

With cordial greetings,

The Citizens of Patmos team
