Thessaloniki: news from the Chapter

During the first six months of 2017 the Thessaloniki Chapter organised a series of outstanding events.

a) World Environment Day 2017 in the Pasha’s Gardens!
For the second consecutive year we celebrated World Environment Day in Thessaloniki, in the Pasha’s Gardens. The celebrations were held on 6 June 2017 and were organised by the Thessaloniki Chapter, the YMCA, Thessaloniki Municipality, the 7th Middle School and the 7th High School of Thessaloniki, the Parents Association of the 7th High School, WWF and “Europe Direct”.

More than 300 primary and secondary school pupils from 6 schools took part in the wide selection of events on offer. The events were organised for the Thessaloniki Chapter by Vasilis Koniordos, vice president of the Chapter and Anna Saraidari, general secretary, who also did a great deal of the work coordinating and organising the whole event.

b) Macedonian Tomb of “Makridi Bey” in Derveni. The work done on protecting, restoring and preserving it.
On Wednesday 7 June 2017, in a packed Melina Merkouri amphitheatre in the Museum of Byzantine Culture, the work on the protection, restoration, preservation and promotion of the Macedonian tomb "Makridis Bey" in Derveni was presented. The team who worked on the project, Fani Athanasiou, Maria Miza, Venetia Malama and Maria Sarantidou, all architects from the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Alexis Papasotiriou, a self-employed civil engineer, gave a detailed presentation on the monument, the serious problems found and the methodology and philosophy behind the approach taken and the solutions chosen to support, protect and promote the tomb.

The event was co-organized by the Architectural Heritage Committee of the Thessaloniki Chapter and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Thessaloniki Region with the kind support and sponsorship of the Museum of Byzantine Culture.

The Chapter is working on an equally interesting programme of events for the autumn including:

• Organising a workshop on promoting the antiquities kept in underground buildings and
• Screening a documentary film, "Roman City Architects", directed by Grigoris Oikonomidis and with Savvas Tsilenis as scientific advisor/script-writer.
• Organising a Week of Films on Ecology for Schools
