Kefalonia Monuments

24/07/2012
The recent earthquakes of Kefalonia have caused serious damages not only to the infrastructure and houses of the island but also to monuments, which over time have not received the attention they deserve.

Since 2013 the Council of Architectural Heritage of ELLINIKI ETAIRIA – Society for the Environment and Culture has focused its efforts on saving three important monuments of Kefalonia: the old church of the Sissia Monastery, the church of Saint Spyridon at the Castle of Saint George, and the Vallianos’ manor at Kerameies.

The old monastery church of Sissia and Saint Spyridon are respectively two unique examples of renaissance and baroque architecture in Greece dating to the Venetian period. However, despite their great architectural and historic value they have been in a ruined condition since 1953, while large parts of them are threatened with immediate collapse. The Vallianos' manor, dating to the early 20th century, is particularly important for the social history of the island, since it is linked with one of the most important Greeks benefactors, P. Vallianos, who funded, among other projects, the erection of the building of the National Library at Athens. The manor has been bestowed to the Municipality of Kefalonia, in order to become a public library.

At the present stage, our aim is to raise funds for carrying out the required restoration studies, which will enable, at the next stage, the implementation of the restoration projects with E.U. funds. After the recent earthquakes, monuments of the Lixouri area will be also included in this initiative.

With your support, Kefalonia’s monuments can be saved!
