The Oinoi Tower, in Marathon: a new life next to the ancient path!

24/07/2012
The Oinoi Tower, found at the beginning of the path – much of it ancient – which leads to the Oinoi gorge, forms part of the “Paths of Culture” programme in Marathon. In spring 2013 ELLINIKI ETAIRIA –having been informed by specialists and locals that the monument had been severely damaged – initiated a campaign to ensure the immediate shoring up of the tower, in order to prevent it falling. In cooperation with with Europa Nostra, arranged that the proceeds of more than € 5000 from the 2013 Cultural Heritage Awards Ceremony in the Herodes Atticus Odeion should be made available for this cause.

In November 2013 in cooperation with SEGAS within the framework of the Athens 31st Classic Marathon, ELLET informed the public about the tower and the need for immediate restoration. The Marathon High School students took an active part in this, making a model of the tower out of wood, paper and cardboard and the interest shown by the public surpassed expectation.

The intervention of the Ministry of Culture and the 1st Bureau of Byzantine Antiquities was immediate and decisive. The authorities embraced the cause in a spirit of cooperation, committed to the early commencement of the works in order to avoid further damage and kept their promise. With the funding of the Ministry of Culture and Sport from the Public Investment Programme 2013, the first phase of the intervention was recently completed by the 1st BBA.

a) a galvanised plate covering was placed on the top level of the tower,

b) immediate supportive interventions were made on the south wall (infilling of cracks and deep joint filling) and on the east wall (packing of holes and restoration of the cohesion of the masonry),

c) wooden shuttering was placed on the vault of the ground floor and scaffolding up to the level of the battlements (necessary for the collection of the data required for the elaboration of the final plans for restoration which the 1st BBA, in cooperation with M. Lambrinou, honorary architect, former Head of the Modern Monuments Service of the Ionian Islands, will draw up.

Upon completion of the final restoration study, the second phase of intervention will begin in order to complete the restoration of the Tower.

The first step for saving the Tower has been taken, as the result of the cooperation between the state and civil society. The aim of all is for the work of restoration and the arranging of the surrounding area to begin soon. These works require the sum of 30,000 €, of which ELLET has already collected 5,730 €, while continuing efforts to achieve the final result .

With your support, the Tower of Oinoi can have a new life!
