Council for the Natural Environment (SFYP)

The Council for the Natural Environment focuses on protecting and conserving biodiversity and on the relevant Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC) and the European Protected Areas Network (Natura 2000). It also works on issues with regard to water quality (Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC), on landscape protection, on waste management, groundwater and soil pollution, and climate change.

The Council advocates against destructive development projects and investigates the Environmental Impact Assessment procedures. It is also concerned with how our country participates in the development of other new policy instruments such as those for soil, mercury etc.

The Council participates in European (LIFE+, EEA grants) and national programmes, either as coordinator or simply as a partner. The Council works in various protected areas in Greece such as Skyros, Prespes, the Amvrakikos Wetlands and Mount Parnassos.

The Natural Environment Council is the representative of the Greek Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs), at the European Environmental Bureau (EEB), which is based in Brussels and is the largest confederation of NGOs in Europe.. The Council works on priority issues for the EEB and Greek NGOs, conducting studies, policy recommendations and organizing workshops in order to disseminate know-how in addition to lobbying with MEPs for necessary policy reforms.

The Council collaborates closely, with research institutions such as the Agricultural University of Athens (AUA), the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), and the Greek Centre for Marine Research (HCMR), as well as various Greek NGOs (the Hellenic Ornithological Society, WWF Hellas, The Hellenic Society for Protection of Nature and more) and local communities
